Cynthia Nadine Batts, Pharm.D.

Cynthia N. Batts is presently a staff pharmacist for Shands Healthcare in Gainesville, Florida and Clinical Assistant Professor for Pharmacy Practice at the University Of Florida College Of Pharmacy. She has been employed with Shands for 17 years. She received her Pharm.D. from Florida A&M University in 1991, and moved to New Orleans Louisiana, where she was employed by Xavier University as Assistant Professor in the Pharmacy Department. Cynthia received her BS degree, however, in 1979 from Florida A&M, and worked one year upon graduation for Eckerd Drugs in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida. She moved to Orlando in 1980, and worked as a pharmacist at Orlando Regional Medical Center for 9 years. While employed at Orlando Regional Medical Center, she worked as Supervisor of Inpatient Services. Cynthia has also worked in retail pharmacy during her 30 years as a pharmacist. She worked as a PRN pharmacist for Eckerd Drugs in the 90’s, Drug Emporium, Super X, and her latest PRN experience has been at Ayers Plaza Pharmacy, located at 720 SW 2^nd Ave., Gainesville, Florida. Cynthia also has done relief work for Winn Dixie in the past.

 In addition, Cynthia is on the Board of the American Cancer Society and is very much involved in the Gainesville Community in health related events. She has spoken on numerous occasions about health related topics in churches and through out the Gainesville community. She also has several publications in the area of pharmacy.

Johnetta Strickland Batts, R.P.H.

 Johnetta Batts is pharmacy director of Orange Blossom Family Clinic in Orlando, Florida where many of the area’s underserved population are patrons. Prior to her current position she worked as a pharmacist for Publix. She was also on staff at Orlando Regional Hospital for 17 years and was inpatient supervisor for some of that tenure. 

 Mrs. Batts graduated from Florida A&M University College of Pharmacy.

Prior to graduating from pharmacy school she received her Associate Diploma from Dunbar Business School in Chicago, and worked as Administrative Assistant for the Urban League. 

 She is very active in her Church, Faith Central International, which is located in Orange Lake, Florida. She is also a member of the church trustee board.

Mrs. Batts is married to Mr. Ray Batts, and is the proud mother of one daughter, Briana. 

Voncea Brusha, BSN, RN

 Ms. Voncea Brusha is a native of Ocala, Florida she is the oldest of seven children growing up poor did not dictate the future for Voncea despite difficult challenges and negative influences of a small city, and being a single parent she persevered with determination to secure a better future for she and her family. She was determined to become a nurse. 

 Ms. Brusha attended elementary school at Madison Street Elementary School in Ocala, Florida. She continued her post secondary education at Howard High School, graduating in 1962. She then enrolled at Hampton Junior College in Ocala Florida where she received her Associate of Arts degree in Natural Science in 1965. She then entered the Licensed Practical Nursing, (LPN) Program at Santa Fe Community College in Gainesville, Florida and graduated as an LPN in 1968. Ms. Brusha decided to further her career in nursing so she reentered Santa Fe into the Registered Nurses Program, (RN) and graduated in 1972 with an Associate of Science Degree in Nursing. Once more following her desire to increase her education she studied for her bachelor degree at Nova University where she graduated in 1987 in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida with a Bachelor of Science degree in Business. Ms. Brusha enrolled at Nova University in1988 into their Master of Science degree program.

 Ms Brusha has been employed at Shands Hospital at the University of Florida for the past 42 years. During that time she has held several key positions. Moving from a Licensed Practical nurse in the Surgical Unit from 1968 to 1972, she went on to become a Registered Nurse II-Team Leader, on the Gynecology Unit. She also served as a member of the nurse recruiting team. From 1984 to the present Ms. Brusha has served as the Charge Nurse/Clinical Staff Nurse on the Mother Baby Unit. Ms Brusha serves on several hospital base committees, one being chair of the Rosa B. Williams Minority scholarship committee. Under Ms. Brusha’s leadership and with her mentoring the success rate among selectees has been outstanding. Many have secured their degrees in health related professions and are practicing professionals.

In November of 2005 Ms. Brusha became the first nurse in Florida to receive the Cherokee Inspired Comfort Nurse of the year Award for outstanding nursing services. The award recognizes nurses and other non-physicians healthcare professionals who demonstrate exceptional service, sacrifice and innovation and have a positive impact on others’ lives. She was one of fourteen chosen by a select panel of nurse leaders from among 1,300 nominations. Ms. Brusha is also co-founder and president of the Greater Gainesville Black Nurses Association, Inc., which is the local chapter of the National Black Nurses, Association, Inc. Ms Brusha organize and serves as presenter at numerous health fairs exhibiting boundless energy and enthusiasm for community awareness about varied health issues.Ms.Brusha has a passion about improving the health and quality of life of youth, routinely conducts teen forums with local adolescents addressing critical health concerns. 

 Ms. Brusha serves the community in many capacities including being a member of the NAACP Health Committee, The African American Accountability Alliance, Florida Voters League, Black Aids Service and Education organization, Guardian ad Litem, Greater Florida Lupus Foundation, and Brothers and Sisters against Cancer. She also holds the distinction of being the sixth Floridians elected to serve on the board for the National Black Nurses Association, Inc. After being elected one of the first task was increasing membership of which she recruited many new members and assisted in organizing a new Florida chapter. She also was selected as a member of a116- member delegation of nurses from the United States to travel to Beijing, China in 2002 under the people to people ambassador program to explore the similarities and differences between nursing and healthcare in the Republic of china and the United States.

 In February of 2006 Ms Brusha was the recipient of the “Spirit of the Community award” presented by Shands Hospital at the University of Florida for community involvement in providing health awareness throughout the community and surrounding counties. Organizing and presenting health workshops on many health-related topics. In February of 2007 Ms Brusha was an honoree at the Ebony Appreciation Awards Banquet held in her honor for contributions made toward the improvement of the quality of life for all citizens in Gainesville, Florida; Alachua County; and surrounding areas.

Ms. Brusha is the mother of one son, Curtis Williams who resides in Tallahassee, Florida and a very special granddaughter Ashley Nicole. Ms. Brusha is an active member of Open Door Ministries in Gainesville, Florida.

Ms. Brusha enjoys traveling, shopping, visiting art museums, relaxing, and being with family.
